Music production

From a phone sketch to a demo you can share: beats, arrangement, instrumentation and recording in one studio workflow, with clear agreements on who takes which files home.

Producer playing a MIDI keyboard in the studio

Production is more than buying a beat. It is choosing structure, picking sounds that fit your lyrics and capturing vocals or live instruments at the right moment—without losing track of which file belongs to which version. Femke van der Meulen has led production and mixing at the studio since 2019.

Music production in Amsterdam covers pop, R&B, hip-hop, electronic singer-songwriter and instrumental demos. You do not need a full band on day one: we blend MIDI, properly licensed samples and live takes in the 38 m² live room when the song asks for it. Afterwards you can move to mixing or mastering, or keep building in your own DAW.

Workflow

  1. 01

    Share references

Send demos, tempo, key and three reference tracks. We decide whether the demo package or hourly rate fits and hold studio time.

  2. 02

    Build the skeleton

Drums, bass line and chord progression—first in the box, then optional live drums or guitars.

  3. 03

    Record layers

Vocals in the booth, keys or guitar in the live room. Everything is labelled by section (intro, verse, chorus).

  4. 04

    Demo export

Stereo mix plus stems or session file as agreed. Transfer via download; revisions within 2 rounds where included.

Who production is for

Artists with lyrics but no producer, producers who want a second opinion in the room, songwriters needing a publisher pitch demo, or rappers who want an original beat plus recording finished in one day. You do not need formal training; we do expect known lyrics and openness to arrangement feedback.

Full album production without a budget plan is a poor fit—our band studio budget guide helps even solo artists. Highly experimental sound-theatre projects get an honest conversation about whether we are the right match.

Demo package versus hourly

The demo package at €380 covers eight production hours in the studio, including prep and a simple stereo mix. That is usually enough for one or two songs at demo quality, depending on complexity and how many layers you add.

Standalone hours are €98 and flexible: an extra day for backing vocals, reprogramming drums or co-writing. Hours beyond a package are always confirmed upfront.

What to prepare

Bring lyrics, maybe a voice memo, and a tempo map if you have one. Without tempo we decide together early on day one. Your own presets or sample packs on a drive are welcome—we do not use pirated downloads.

For vocals the same health tips apply as in vocal preparation guide: arriving rested gives better takes. We tune guitar and bass beforehand; drums are set in the live room with 12 preamps available for multitrack.

Files, stems and rights

By default you receive a stereo demo mix to share. For a surcharge or within the demo package we can also deliver:

  • Stems (drums, bass, music, vocals separate)
  • Project file from our DAW (compatibility checked first)
  • MIDI of programmed parts

Who owns the beat, who may release and what happens on splits is written down before we start, with reference to terms and conditions. Neustonorix does not claim co-authorship unless we explicitly agree co-writing at an adjusted rate.

Working with other services

Many clients record vocals separately under vocal recording when the production day is full. Mixing is a separate service at mixing rates—the demo mix in the package is a listening proof, not release-ready mastering.

We master when your final mix is ready. Each stage stays billable and you know which revisions belong where.

Revisions and scope

The demo package includes 2 revision rounds on arrangement and demo mix: shorter intro, different drum fill, vocal half a tone differently, for example. It is not unlimited ‘make it a hit’ without extra hours.

Hourly clients schedule revisions in the same session or book more time. After 6 months without follow-up we close the project administratively; files stay available to download for 12 months.

Scheduling and studio

Production uses control room and live room—up to 5 musicians at once when recording live. Book via contact; 25% deposit on confirmation. Hours: Mon–Fri 09:00–21:00 · Sat 10:00–18:00.

Address: Overtoom 282, 1054 GZ Amsterdam. Access: Tram 1 to Surinameplein, then about four minutes on foot via Overtoom; bus 15 stops on Overtoom. Bike rack outside; on-street car parking nearby (paid, evening rate).. Cancel up to 5 days ahead per terms and conditions.

What is not included

Outside session players, sample clearance, video, artwork, distribution and marketing sit outside Music production. Heavy vocal tuning beyond standard effect tuning is mixing work.

Minimum age 16. Minors welcome with parental consent. We treat unfinished work confidentially under the privacy policy.

Can I split the demo package across weeks?

Yes, as long as hours are used within 6 months. Unused hours expire unless we extend.

Who owns the beat?

How fast do you reply to enquiries?

Within 2 business days on [email protected] or the contact form. Rush only when the calendar allows.

Do you record bands during production?

Yes, up to 5 people in the live room. Larger ensembles are referred to band recording day rates.
